The official objections.

Posted by Camberwell Village Hall on August 22, 2010 at 1:16 PM

This is a huge thank you to everyone who has signed the petition. 560ish of you so far have signed the petition, most of them online but some paper copies too (hence, I'm not exactly sure of numbers). The most important thing to say about this is that three quarters of the people who signed actaully come from Camberwell, as opposed to the vast majority of people who agree with the change of use, almost all of whom (and there are only about 50 or so letters that have been sent to the council so far) are not from the area.

The other point to mention is that a lot of the comments are less about objecting to the church and more about standing up for a community venue. This is what it is all about.

It really has taken a lot of time to do the objections but it's been worth it to make sure we get it right. Although the official consultation period has actaully over, according to Rob Bristow, the head of planning, and Susannah Pettit, the planning officer in charge of these planning applications, we can still send in representations (i.e. objections). So please see below for more things you can do.

The objections we have written are divided into three parts. The first part is the general objections and the second is a point by point objection to all the documents provided. There will be more added tomorrow regarding the transport plan, noise assessment and the appendices. Click on the link below.

Part one: General Overview

Part two: Detailed comments

You can also still send in letters to object to the change of use and the internal alterations. You will need to email Susannah Pettit at planning.applications@southwark.gov.uk quoting the planning application 10/AP/1879 which deals with the internal changes to the building and 10/AP/1875 which deals with the change of use from D2 to D1. The latter is the big one and the one that is most important to object to. If you are not one of the 600 people who have signed the petition (and thank you if you are) you can still do so at http//:bit.ly/camberwellvillagehallpetition

If you have signed it, you can also send in a letter to Susannah Pettit. We have three letters to choose from. They are fairly long, but you can change and adapt them. In fact it is better to personalise them than send them as a standard template letter.

Letter one: Amenities and Regeneration

Letter two: Transport and Noise

Letter three: Consultation and the Arts in Camberwell

Please take the time to look at the letters and send your version to Susannah. Poor Susannah, she may be getting a few emails in the next few days.

Thank you and above all, KEEP MAKING A FUSS.

The way the last council Lib.dem. with the help of the cons. were trying to sell as much of our community venues, we need this size of venue to hold all meetings and conferences in Southwark.
I'm a incomer as I have only been in Southwark for over 30years and in the tenants movement for as long.
WE NEED VENUES TO HOLD THESE INPORTANT MEETINGS ETC.
If only other southwark residents would suport this partision we may stop our council from giving permission for a take over and keep it in the use of the community,
Ina Norton a southalk tenant.

Thanks for your comments Ina,

The best thing to do is either sign the petition or better still send a letter to the planning officer as soon as possible. Oh, and tell all your friends to do the same!

They seem to be making major alterations to the building already without planning permission? I went past on the bus yesterday and it was full of workman ripping out the interior.

Hi Nick,

We had noticed but have also spoken to the planning department and let them know. Very cheeky, especially considering that the 20th Century Society are particularly worried about the lobby area and the loss of the original features.

It is just a further sign that they are not particularly concerned with preserving the heritage of the building and seem to believe that they are bound to win the change of use planning application. Very arrogant of them I think.

Apologies, not the 20th Century society. I meant the Cinema Theatre Association.

Tom stop messing about the church. You were disgraced at the last polls and making a meal out of the church would not work.
House of Praise is doing a good job and we will give our full support to them and the council Planners.
Parasites and cockroaches should stop bugging us in Camberwell. dont divide us but build us Mr Leighton !

Dear Lorna,

I just tried to email you but the email address you give is incorrect. Please, at least give me a way to respond. It is not fair to give out false email addresses. Anyway, here is my response below.

I wish I could share your enthusiasm for the House of Praise. However, the point is that they have not shown that they are willing to listen to and engage with the community. I have tried on many occasions to get in touch with Andrew Adeleke and discuss ways in which we could work together for the benefit of the whole community. He has not responded and nor has he made any attempt to show that actually the church would be for local use.

You obviously have access to the website, and all the arguments are there as to why I think that having a church (or any organisation) in the old bingo hall that is not for the whole community, will in the long run not be for the good of the community.

I should point out that saying I was disgraced in last polls is slightly subjective. I think getting 6.5% of the vote in an area where Labour is strong with only two weeks campaigning and very limited resources is not a disgrace. I know that some Labour candidates are worried that we may stand again and win.

I you wish to ask for more information, then by all means please get in touch.

Many thanks,

Tom.

20th Century Society did put in an objection to the first application and the lobby was a major concern. They also got in touch with building control over the building works
